Debbie Richert’s journey into the world of child advocacy spans an impressive 30-year career in early childhood, preschool, and K-12 educational programs. Throughout her extensive experience, she encountered CASA volunteers and witnessed firsthand the profound impact they have on the lives of vulnerable children. It was no surprise when she made the decision to become a volunteer herself.

Sworn in as a CASA advocate in March 2024, Debbie wasted no time diving into her role. In April, she was assigned a child in kinship foster care, a situation marked by neglect, parental chemical dependency, and domestic violence. Navigating through the complexities of the courts, foster care system, and various stakeholders, Debbie emerged as a steadfast voice for her assigned child.

Despite the challenges inherent in her new role, Debbie remains resolute in her commitment to advocating for the best interests of children. She recognizes the immense importance of bringing the voice of her CASA child into the courtroom and community.

Describing her child as highly intelligent and beautiful, Debbie continues to learn and grow as a CASA advocate. Her advice to anyone considering joining the ranks of CASA volunteers is simple yet powerful: “Just do it.” With no regrets, Debbie has found the support and camaraderie of her fellow volunteers and CASA staff to be invaluable assets in her journey.

In her spare time, Debbie embodies the essence of balance and commitment. Married for over 45 years, she cherishes her family, which includes two children and three grandchildren. Debbie finds solace and joy in simple pleasures, such as reading, leisurely walks with her dog, and the art of quilting.

Debbie’s story reminds us of the transformative power of advocacy and the profound impact that each individual can have in the lives of others.
