Maile Ewalt’s life has always been surrounded by children. As a mother of three adult sons, a stepmother to a son and daughter, and now a grandmother to four, Maile knows the profound impact family and love have on a child’s development. Beyond her family ties, Maile’s passion for children extends into her professional and volunteer life.
With a career spanning decades, Maile brings a wealth of experience to her role as a volunteer for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). After earning her degree, she spent 10 years as a Child Protective Social Worker in Yellowstone County, where she gained invaluable insight into the foster care system. For the past 20 years, she’s worked as a care manager at St. Vincent Healthcare, currently in the Pediatric Specialty Clinic, but it was her background in Child Protective Services that inspired her to join CASA 12 years ago.
Since becoming a CASA volunteer, Maile has worked on a range of cases, advocating for children of all ages. Some cases have come with complex challenges, but Maile’s never-give-up attitude and determination have consistently led to positive resolutions for the children involved. One recent case was particularly unique—after navigating a complex situation involving both biological and adoptive parents, Maile helped ensure the child involved had the best of both worlds. Thanks to the efforts of all parties and Maile’s dedication, the child was placed in a situation where they thrived, receiving the love and care they deserved.
Another poignant case involved a young man who had been adopted by a family member, only for that relative to unexpectedly pass away. After several attempts in different homes, including a group home, Maile helped facilitate a permanent placement with the child’s uncle and aunt. Today, the young man continues to flourish in their care. These stories are a testament to Maile’s deep commitment to seeing cases through and ensuring that children are placed in the most nurturing environments.
Maile’s approach to advocating for children is grounded in consistency, listening to the child’s wishes, and being a reliable presence in their lives. She believes in being someone the child can count on—someone who will always be there for them. And, as many teenagers can attest, Maile’s knack for connecting with kids often involves bringing along food or treats to brighten their day.
For Maile, the most rewarding part of her CASA experience is seeing a case through to the end, no matter where the child lands. She cherishes the opportunity to be there for the child, ensuring their best interests are represented throughout the legal process.
Her advice for anyone considering becoming a CASA advocate is simple but powerful: “Have an open mind about all parties involved, and remember that people can change. Each case has its own twists and turns, but it’s important to remain patient and always advocate for the best interests of the child.”
Maile Ewalt’s dedication to the children she serves is a shining example of what it means to be a compassionate and steadfast advocate. Whether it’s through her professional work in pediatrics, her volunteer service with CASA, or the love she pours into her own family, Maile is a true champion for children, making a lasting difference in their lives.
