Susie Collum, a dedicated CASA advocate and Peer Coordinator, has had a fulfilling journey driven by her passion for working with children. Raised in Billings, she knew from an early age that she wanted to teach primary school children. After earning her teaching degree, she spent 29 years in the Billings Public School District, bringing great joy to her students.
Upon retiring, Susie sought to continue her impactful work with children and found her calling with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Her journey to CASA began with a friend’s recommendation and was solidified when she heard a compelling radio ad and saw a CASA billboard. This serendipitous discovery marked the beginning of her seven-year tenure with CASA.
Susie is currently assigned to a re-entry case advocating for two sisters. She was initially worried that the two girls wouldn’t remember her since it had been a while since she had been on their case. Right away, the girls recognized Susie and were so happy and excited to see her. She cherishes learning about their summer plans and activities, finding joy in connecting with them on a personal level again.
Reflecting on her role, Susie expresses that being a CASA advocate is an honor. She believes in providing support and care to families navigating challenging times. She finds deep gratification in collaborating with a team to ensure that children’s needs are met. Most importantly, Susie values the lasting relationships she forms with the children and families served by CASA.
For those considering becoming a CASA advocate, Susie offers heartfelt advice: she emphasizes the unwavering support and guidance provided by the CASA team. To her, CASA embodies a “ministry of the heart,” enriching her life profoundly through meaningful involvement.
Susie Collum’s dedication and compassion exemplify the profound impact CASA advocates can have on the lives of children and families in their communities. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of caring and advocacy.
